The cursed devil butcher from Mindelheim

Mindelheim, the picturesque district town in the Unterallgäu district with its dreamy corners, is characterized by old city wall ruins, city gates, and towers. One of these towers is the 34-meter-high prison tower, also known as the Malefizturm, Raubturm, or Eisenturm. Built in the 13th century, this cylindrical tower made of plastered bricks with its characteristic pointed spire served as a prison in the Middle Ages, where those sentenced to death were incarcerated. In 1776, the last condemned man fell victim to the executioner. According to legend, one man who escaped this fate despite a lifetime of swindling was a butcher. He was in league with the devil and paid for cattle with enchanted coins. When his deception was discovered, he only had to eat cow dung or stand on a dung heap. Then, as if by magic, he became invisible and no one could apprehend him. But he paid a high price for this black magic. For when his life was coming to an end, he could not die. As soon as a clergyman came to his deathbed, he disappeared from the bed and became invisible. So he escaped prison, but not the devil. In 1834, a Fronfeste was added to the prison tower. Since 2000, this former prison has been home to the Frundsberg Festring association, which organizes the Frundsbergfest every three years, a festival in memory of the former lord of the city, Georg von Frundsberg. The city moat is only a stone’s throw away from the prison tower and the Fronfeste. A narrow passageway branches off from the old city wall with its battlement. This moat was filled with water until 1809 and has been a beautiful green space since 1996. Mindelsheim’s old town really seems to have sprung from a medieval book, because at every corner you can find stone witnesses of the past that let me walk in the footsteps of the Middle Ages.
