Particularly haunting is the legend of a fallen captain, whose face is said to appear in a niche in the fortress wall, staring piercingly at visitors. His gaze is said to be so intense that some claim to have suffered nightmares for days after such an encounter. It is said that this man was betrayed and murdered by his own men during the Battle of Navarino. As a result, his soul is said to find no peace, but to be bound forever to the walls of this fortress.
Scientific scepticism and the power of myths – Of course, there is absolutely no evidence that the ghosts of the fallen soldiers actually exist. Historians emphasise that it is normal for places with a long and bloody history to be shrouded in legends and myths. Every year, hundreds of tourists and curious ghost hunters come to Pylos to explore Neókastro – and perhaps to face their worst nightmare.

One particularly terrifying story claims that, on a full moon, the laughter of children can be heard – a strange notion, given that children are said never to have lived within the walls. It is said, however, that the laughter does not come from playing souls, but is the sad echo of lost innocence, buried amidst the violence of war.
