The Witcher Tower

The Middle Ages were characterized by mighty castles, brave knights with fair princesses, bloody crusades, and the darkest chapter in European history: the witch hunts. This cruel past, in which people were arbitrarily suspected of being witches or practicing black magic, came to an end in Europe a good 200 years ago. To this day, historical buildings such as the Witch Tower in Oberderdingen, a municipality in the district of Karlsruhe, serve as reminders of this terrible time. This tower was one of a total of four watchtowers belonging to the former fortifications of the Amtshof, which was built in 1391 as the administrative headquarters of the Herrenalb monastery. Its name, Hexenturm (Witch Tower), comes from the fact that over 500 years ago, people suspected of witchcraft were imprisoned there. The last witch to be held captive there and burned at the stake at the end of the 16th century was named Borgin. Her remains were buried in the Lehrnwald forest on the border between Württemberg and the Electoral Palatinate. The grave site is still visible there today. The Hexenturm served as a local prison until after the Second World War. After one day, the prisoner had to be transferred by the rural police to the Maulbronn district prison. Today, the Hexenturm houses an exhibition about the Amtshof. The Hexenturm in Oberderdingen is a valuable cultural asset that gave me important insights into life in the Middle Ages. The tower thus makes a piece of contemporary history unforgettable. According to the world-famous author Adalbert Stifter, “every person should read the history of past times and learn to keep it before their eyes as a warning sign for their future.”
