It is said that these are the souls of the noble families who once lived in the region’s real castles and palaces. Particular mention is often made of the souls of those who met their deaths through betrayal or violence. The Legacy of the ‘Black Knight’ – A particularly terrifying legend surrounds the castle’s Gothic tower, whose architecture was influenced by Hunedoara Castle. In Hungarian and Romanian folklore, this place is regarded as the abode of the so-called ‘Black Knight’. This mysterious warrior, who is said to have committed the sin of pride and sacrificed hundreds of innocent people to his ambition, found no peace in death. It is said that on nights when the moon is full, he roams the castle’s halls – wearing his heavy helmet, beneath which, however, no face is concealed. His silver shield reflects the moonlight, whilst his footsteps echo amid the crunching of stones. Anyone who encounters him is said to fall under a curse that haunts every brave soul with terrible nightmares and changes their fate forever.
Myth or truth? The historical background behind the legends – Vajdahunyad Castle owes its existence to the architect Ignác Alpár, who designed it in 1896 for the Millennium celebrations. Originally, the structure was merely a temporary construction made of wood and papier-mâché, but due to its popularity, it was later rebuilt using stone and brick. What makes the castle so fascinating is the fusion of various historical architectural styles and elements: Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque blend here to create a unique mix that pays tribute to Hungary’s diverse eras. In fact, inspiration drawn from Hunedoara Castle – a castle in Transylvania – has contributed significantly to the eerie atmosphere of Vajdahunyad. Hunedoara is known for its own ghostly history, particularly the tales surrounding Vlad III, better known as Vlad the Impaler or Count Dracula, who is closely associated with this fortress. The Hungarian castle seems to have absorbed this eerie aura, amplified by the countless stories that surround it.
Eerie Echoes: Curses and Lost Souls – Another eerie rumour centres on the alleged curse that hangs over the castle. According to a widespread legend, one of the castle’s master builders – who was executed for a minor error – is said to have cursed those who dwell within the castle walls with his dying breath. This curse states that anyone who attempts to take possession of the castle or uncover its secrets will be struck by misfortune. Real historical events are cited to support this myth: from strange construction accidents during its building to reports of visitors who fell ill after spending a night near the castle. An archivist who regularly visited the building reported having strange dreams in which the walls began to speak and warned him of danger.
Tourists Encounter the Unimaginable – Although such stories are certainly intended more as popular entertainment, there are repeated reports of modern-day tourists feeling uneasy whilst on a tour of the castle. Psychologists suspect that the combination of Gothic architecture, the gloomy play of light and the knowledge of the legends might be enough to trigger a powerful suggestion that induces fear and unease. Yet not every visitor leaves the castle without a strange memory. For example, a couple recently described how, whilst strolling through the courtyards at dusk, they heard footsteps following them. When they turned round, there was no one there. Others report the feeling of being watched – particularly near the Gothic tower, where the echo sounds strangely distorted and the shadows seem to move.
