Set amidst the picturesque landscape of Istria, not far from the Croatian town of Kanfanar, stands one of the region’s most unusual and, at the same time, most eerie sights: Dvigrad, also known as Duecastelli. The once-magnificent town is now a deserted ruin, shrouded in tales that are not only historically fascinating but also send an icy shiver down your spine. The legends surrounding Dvigrad stretch far back in time and are deeply ingrained in the region’s collective memory. Particularly eerie is the story of the old St Sophia’s Church, which stands enthroned like a sentinel amongst the crumbling walls. Whilst silence hangs over the ruins, tales are told of a cursed treasure, a dark past and restless ghosts who are said to still prowl the remains of this medieval town.
The grim history of Dvigrad – Dvigrad, whose name refers to two originally neighbouring fortresses, was once an important medieval town. Early archaeological evidence suggests that the region was already inhabited in Roman times. In the Middle Ages, Dvigrad grew into a strategically important settlement that attracted merchants and nobles alike. Yet despite its former wealth, the passage of time left deep scars on this patch of land. Wars, diseases and famines ravaged the town until it was finally abandoned in the 17th century. One particularly devastating event was the outbreak of the plague, which raged across Europe and did not spare Dvigrad either. The epidemic wiped out the majority of the population, forcing the survivors to eventually abandon their once-thriving town. But why do tourists and adventurers still flock to this deserted valley today? It is not just the historical remains that make Dvigrad such a magnet – it is the eerie stories that live on in the stones of the ruins.
The Legend of St Sophia’s Church – At the heart of Dvigrad stand the imposing ruins of St Sophia’s Church, which has outlasted the decay of all the other buildings. Despite its dilapidated state, it exudes a ghostly majesty that both fascinates and sends shivers down visitors’ spines. This church is at the centre of a legend that seems inextricably linked to the town’s fate. According to an ancient tradition, St Sophia’s Church was used not only as a place of worship but also as a sacred repository for a valuable treasure. Some claim it consisted of gold and precious stones, said to represent the immense wealth of a noble family; others believe it was a holy artefact possessing mystical powers. Whatever it was that aroused such desire – the treasure is said to have been burdened with a deadly curse. According to legend, the curse struck down anyone who attempted to seize the treasure. Those who enriched themselves with the mysterious riches met a mysterious death or vanished without a trace. Some even say that their souls are doomed to wander forever within the church walls. To this day, visitors who have explored the ruined town at night report eerie apparitions: shadowy figures, whispering voices or footsteps that seem to come from nowhere.
Mysterious clues and scientific records – Despite Dvigrad’s legendary status, the ruined city is also a fascinating site for archaeologists. Over the past few decades, numerous investigations have been carried out there, shedding light not only on the city’s history but also on the origins of many of its legends. St Sophia’s Church, in particular, has been the subject of intensive research. Historians discovered that, although the church was rebuilt several times, its floor plan always featured an unusual pattern that could possibly be of occult origin. Some experts suspect that the church not only served the Christian faith but may also have been the site of pagan rituals. Such theories may have formed the basis of the legend surrounding the treasure and the curse. But it is not only the scientific community that has documented strange occurrences in Dvigrad. There are reports from photographers and researchers who experienced peculiar anomalies whilst on site. Cameras failed for no apparent reason, equipment malfunctioned, and some even claimed to have experienced sudden drops in temperature that did not correspond to natural weather conditions. One of the best-known accounts comes from a team of ghost hunters who investigated the ruined city in 2015. During their night-time expedition, they heard strange noises, including a soft tapping, as if someone were knocking against stone walls, and unintelligible murmuring. The silhouette of a human figure is also said to have been visible on a thermal imaging camera – even though there was no one else nearby.
Warnings from the locals – The ruined city has always attracted curious visitors. Nevertheless, locals warn against entering Dvigrad after dark. Many are convinced that the ghosts of the past still watch over the town. They tell of tourists who returned with stiff limbs and pale faces after spending a night near the ruins. Some are said to suffer from insomnia and nightmares, as if they had brought something back with them from the town. An elderly man from the nearby village of Kanfanar reported a few years ago that, as a young lad, he had explored Dvigrad with friends. Whilst they were playing near St Sophia’s Church, he saw a strange light shining from inside the ruins. As he approached, he suddenly felt an icy hand on his shoulder, even though no one was standing behind him. Even today, he says, he gets goosebumps when he thinks back on this incident.
A place full of mysteries – Dvigrad may be an abandoned ruin today, but the stories surrounding the town bring it to life – or rather, make it undead. Whether there is any truth to the legends of the cursed treasure and the restless spirits, or whether they are merely the product of folklore, is up to each individual to decide. What is certain, however, is that the ruined town exudes a unique atmosphere that captivates both adventurers and history enthusiasts alike. For all those brave enough to embark on a journey into the darkness of Dvigrad, one question remains unanswered: will you leave the place unchanged? Or will you become part of the legends of this ghostly place?
