Many visitors report a strange feeling of unease and sounds resembling voices or footsteps, even though there is no one to be seen far and wide. Among the many legends surrounding the castle is the story of Blanka, an orphan whose kindness and tragic fate touch the heart – and send a shiver down your spine.
Who was Blanka? – Blanka was an orphan who, according to legend, lived at the castle as a young woman. She was known for her extraordinary kindness and her big heart. Despite her difficult circumstances, she always had a sympathetic ear for the worries of the castle’s inhabitants and looked after those who were even worse off. Her gentle nature earned her the nickname ‘Guardian Angel’. It is said that Blanka knew how to appease even the cruellest lords of the castle with her demeanour, thereby spreading peace and harmony in a time of injustice and violence. The lord of the castle is said to have been plagued by nightmares and visions in which Blanka appeared to him and, with her unwavering kindness, accused him of cruelty. His cruelty is said to have ultimately driven him mad, until, in a fit of rage, he left the castle and never returned.
The Ghostly Apparitions – Many visitors to the castle ruins claim to be able to sense Blanka’s presence. According to legend, her spirit continues to watch over the castle and protects those with pure hearts – whilst haunting the unrighteous with terror. Several eyewitnesses report seeing a white figure wandering through the ruins, which sometimes appears near the former dungeon. Others describe a sudden chill and an overwhelming sense of sadness that comes over them when they enter the castle. The atmosphere is said to be particularly ghostly and eerie at sunset or after dark. To date, no official investigation into paranormal activity at Považský hrad has been carried out, yet the sheer number of reports suggests that the legend of Blanka could be far more than mere popular imagination.
